My Gardening Journey
Three years ago I started my first garden. At the time, I was interested in learning more about where my food comes from. I quickly realized that my food choices were not only effecting my health but were also impacting the environment.
That summer, we switched to buying most of our meat locally from two farms that practice ethical and sustainable farming practices. I also started my first garden.
My first garden was no walk in the park.. I watched videos for hours and found myself searching for answers online. Thank goodness for modern technology! Overall, my first year was challenging but very successful. Not to mention-- the lessons I learned were worth their weight in gold!!
Gardening has changed my life and I wish I would have started sooner. My relationship with food and the world around me has drastically changed for the better. I feel a great sense of purpose behind the food I grow.
Not only is the produce providing for us and fueling our bodies, but the plants are part of a beautiful ecosystem that I can help steward.
My journey is no where near being over.. in fact, I feel like I'm just getting started! There is SO much to learn and I can't wait to continue growing.
I hope you'll join me on this beautiful journey!
Busting 4 Gardening Myths:
1. You need a lot of space-- There are many plants that are great for container gardening. I recommend starting with herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers. You can even grow potatoes in containers!
THINK VERTICAL Save space by growing vertical plants such as beans and cucumbers!
2. You need perfect soil-- In general you want loose, nutrient rich soil. There are several things you can add to your soil to achieve this including: compost, vermiculite, peat moss, sand, fish emulsion, worm castings, etc.
3. It’s not economical-- Does gardening take a lot of time? I'd be lying if I said it didn't.. but if you enjoy being outside, it's a great way to be productive while learning about nature. Does it cost a lot of money? Gardening can cost as much as you want to put into it. We focus on being as resourceful as possible
TIPS for being RESOURCEFUL:
- Purchase tools and supplies that are used and take care of them so that you have them for years to come.
- Make your own compost pile/bin so you don't need to purchase organic material.
- Plant directly in the ground & capture rainwater off of a building nearby.
4. You have to use pesticides-- Garden pests can be a pain but you do not need to spray your plants. In fact, I chose to hand pick most insects and catch them early by looking for eggs. You also can use row covers and companion planting to ward off those nasty buggers.
